A SHOCKING AFFAIR—DEATH BY
POISON.

The citizens of Canton were startled and shocked
on Sunday morning last by hearing that Mr.
Levi Shaffer, for years past connected with
some of our best business houses, had died sud-
denly on Saturday night by poison. It seems
Mr. Shaffer on Saturday evening asked for
some boneset at Cameron's drug store. Mr. C.,
not being in, and the clerk by some mistake
gave him aconite (wolfsbane), a deadly poi-
son. Mr. S. took a large portion just before
retiring to bed at Mr. U. K. Feather's. He
soon complained to Mrs. Shaffer of feeling bad
and they arose and went down stairs alarming
Mr. and Mrs. Feather. Mr. Shaffer continued
to get worse rapidly and in a few minutes went
into spasms and expired before a physician could
arrive, about 11 o'clock. When the physician
arrived he said he had taken enough to kill a
dozen. Mr. Shaffer for some time past had
been connected with James B. Estep's estab-
lishment at Canal Fulton. He leaves a young
wife to lament an unexpected death. Mr. S.
was in the 33d year of his age, a good business
man, highly esteemed by all who knew him. It
is a most lamentable affair.—Canton Democrat.
