SOUTHERN RIGHTS.
When Mr. Justice Woodward said that the slaveholders might “fall back on their natural rights, and employ in defence of their property whatever means they possess or can command,” he was not as explicit as he might have been. He was disloyal enough as far as he went, but he did not go far enough. He should have told us what the “natural rights” of the slaveholders consist in. We are curious to know whether they include the right to hang and shoot Union citizens in East Tennessee; the right to hunt Union refugees in Louisiana with blood-hounds; the right to manufacture drinking-cups of dead Yankees' skulls; the right to shoot Union prisoners at the tobacco warehouse in Richmond, for looking out of the window; the right to burn the town of Lawrence, Kansas, and massacre the helpless women and children.
Are these among the natural rights referred to by Mr. Justice Woodward?
