[FOR THE HERALD]

TEMPERANCE CONVENTION.

A Convention of the friends of temperance, called by the executive committee of the county temperance society, met at Pawlet on Tuesday, the 30th Jan inst., and organized by appointing Francis Slason Esq President. Jacob Edgerton Jr Esq Vice President. and Chose Spencer, H Griswold, Daniel Frost Esq and John M Clark, Committee of arrangement.

After singing by the choir, and prayer by the Rev Mr Plumb the following resolutions were discussed by Messrs Frost, Spencer, Plumb, Leonard and Jones and passed

1. Resolved, That all members of Temperance Societies present be requested to take seats in the convention and participate in its deliberations

2. Resolved, That looking over the whole ground and contemplating the temperance revolution in all its particulars, we have great and increasing cause for perseverance and encouragement

3. Resolved, That the great diminution in the sale and use of ardent spirits as an article of drink, is an encouraging fact, and proves that its entire abandonment as such, is practicable

4. Resolved, That, in the opinion of this convention, the time has fully come when the pledge of total abstinence from all intoxicating liquors should be universally adopted by all the real friends of temperance.

5. Resolved, That we view it to be the duty of the friends of temperance to cause the temperance pledge to be understood, and when understood, to be signed by those who adopt its principle

6. Resolved, That, as information on this subject is important for the final triumph of the cause, we, as members of this convention, feel ourselves bound to make an extra effort to put into the hands of every person, authorized to grant licenses, some temperance publication.

The convention adjourned to Wednesday, 10 o'clock and gave place to a temperance lecture in the evening, from Daniel Frost, Esq. from the state of New York

On Wednesday the following resolutions were adopted after debate by Messrs Spencer, Wilson of Rupert, Frost, and Anderson of Manchester

7. Resolved, That, in the opinion of this convention it is the duty of all the real friends of temperance, and especially the members of temperance societies, to withhold their patronage and support from all those shops and stores where intoxicating liquors are sold as a common beverage

8. Resolved, That the friends of temperance ought to continue to memorialize the Legislature to prohibit by law the traffic in ardent spirits, until their prayer shall be granted

Resolved, That the members of the Legislature are collectively and individually responsible to the community for all their public acts: Therefore

Resolved, That the resolution of the last House of Representatives, declaring that all laws prohibiting the sale of ardent spirits would be unconstitutional, is not sustained either by the constitution or the moral sense of the community but considered as highly at variance with the spirit of our laws and the best interests of the people.

On the last resolution Messrs Anderson and Frost commented severely upon the resolution of the House and read Articles 6th, 7th, and 18th, of the constitution and the act in relation to common Tipplers in proof of its absurdity. Mr Frost citing Constitution, chapter 2 section 5 declared that House itself to be unconstitutional and that the passage of that resolution was the evidence of it.

10. Resolved, That the thanks of this convention be given to the inhabitants of Pawlet for their attention to our accommodation, and particularly to the choir of singers for the gratification they have afforded both to the ear and the heart

11. Resolved, That the thanks of this convention and of the assembly be presented to Daniel Frost Esq, for his devotedness to the cause of temperance, and for the interesting and instructive address with which he has favored us.

The convention adjourned to meet at West Poultney on Thursday the 15th February instant.
