A Poetical Chronology
Of crown'd Depravity—the spurious cause! James I..
Of fatal Zeal, infringing sacred Laws: Char. I.
Of Usurpation,—yet compleatly great,
Which rose to shine, and rule the ruin'd state; Cromw.
Who, from a Captain, govern'd like a King,
Made Spain to tremble, France her Presents bring.
Of barren Indolence, and fruitful vice; Char.
Of papal Tyranny, and Cowardice,
Who did to France and Priests the Laws betray, Jam. II.
And from a Crown and Sceptre stole away.
How Subjects dar'd with their supreme contend,
And their lov'd Laws and Liberties defend! Revolu.
What Meekness, Merit, Majesty possess'd
What poison'd Shafts pierc'd her unguarded breast! Q. Anne,
Why Right established, justified a Claim, Geo. I.
Why more to an Hero dignified a Fame. Geo. II.
With noble Sentiments he mounts the Throne,
Subdues his Foes, and makes the World his own.
May he till flourish, may he nobly shine; Geo. III.
Nor North Wind blast, or Fox corrupt the Vine.
So sing, historic Muse, in boldest Lays.
Nor Critic Censure fear, nor covet praise.
