William Leonard, Colored, Saw Two Years Active Service
William M. Leonard, colored, returned to this city on Sunday after having passed two years' active service in the Philippine Islands, as a private in Company K of the 49th Regiment Volunteers.
Leonard left San Francisco with his regiment on October 17, 1899. Returning he left Luzon on the United States transport Grant on June 2 and arrived at San Francisco on June 25, after an unusually fast voyage. The regiment was mustered out of service on June 30.
Mr. Leonard was much pleased with the military life and will probably return to the islands in a few months as a clerk in the quartermaster's department.
He says that the natives of the islands are as a rule intelligent and that a great deal is being done for them by the Americans. The natives, he says, are very anxious to get American clothes but so far they have had no opportunity to get them. Mr. Leonard was sick in the hospital for about three months while away. After coming out of the hospital he was detailed in the quartermaster's department as a clerk. He is staying with his parents in this city at No. 825 Small street.
