BENEVOLENCE.
It was remarked by the heathen philosopher Cicero, that man resembles God in nothing so much as in doing good to others. Benevolence is one of those virtues which redeem the human character from the thraldom of sordid selfishness; and is, indeed, as Shakspeare terms it, "like the gentle dew from Heaven," refreshing and cheering the kindred virtues of the heart, while it diffuses life and fertility over the "place beneath."
With these views, it is gratifying to observe the active operation of that charity, which the recent fires at the south have called into exercise. The prompt and liberal relief which has been contributed from every quarter, is honourable to our national character, and must tend to strengthen the bonds of our political union, by adding those ties of grateful recollection, which are not, like those of interest, liable to be severed by accidental occurrences.
