Full Text
Young Gouley, the Murderer, at School.
At school, he was careless and cowardly. A school associate says of him:
"He would be read out in chapel in the morning, before the whole school, for some misdemeanor, and never seemed to know or comprehend the fact. He bore a disreputable name, but it was not so much from possessing positively bad passions, or from any marked viciousness, as from a want of moral character, feeling, and understanding. It would seem from his character, as developed at school, that he must have been laboring under a temporary fit of insanity when he enacted the late horrible tragedy, that he did not realizing the heinousness of his crime--its awful consequences upon himself, and the unfortunate victims of it. There was, indeed, an expression about his face which was marked and peculiar. It would commonly have been called a foolish, verdant, silly look; it may, however, have been an indication of such a mental development as should have subjected him to such care and government as are not applied to ordinary children. He never had his lessons at school, and was a great trial to his teachers, and especially to the principal."
