Why the South is Democratic.

From the N. Y. Star, Aug. 16th, 1880.

Since the close of the civil war a new generation has grown up in the Southern States, and a large immigration has taken root there from Northern States and foreign countries. Operating among these elements, with the negro vote as a virtual unit at its command, and with the powerful lever of patronage in its grasp, the Republican party should certainly have maintained and augmented its strength in the South if it had any positive merits to recommend it.
