HYDE PARK, N. Y.--(SNS)-Preservation of the social and economic gains in liberalism in next Tuesday's elections was called for by President Roosevelt Friday night in a speech from his Hyde Park home.
The chief executive warned that unless democracy "moves forward as a living force" Fascism and Communism will grow in strength. He cited to Americans the "terrorism and intolerance" in other lands.
ASKS LEHMAN ELECTION
It was the first fireside chat of the President in several months.
Mr. Roosevelt traced the record of his administration and pledged non-interference with private enterprise provided abuses are eliminated. He also appealed for the election of Governor Lehman, of New York, saying that "governing the state of New York requires the skill that comes from long experience in public affairs." He did not mention Lehman's opponent-Thomas Dewey by name, but was evidently referring to his youth.
The President's address was in the main devoted to a philosophic and comparative discussion of government.
"MUST PROVE' SELF"
Only "by proving itself worth saving," said Mr. Roosevelt, will democracy save itself with the average man and woman "in these tense and dangerous situations in the world."
"Too many of those who prate about saving democracy are really interested in saving things as they were," the President stated. "Democracy should concern itself also with things as they ought to be. I am not talking mere idealism, I am pressing realistic necessity."
