SAD ACCIDENT.—On Sunday afternoon a boy was drowned at Zanesville, Ohio, under the following circumstances: A boat had come up through the locks, and they had commenced opening the swing bridge at the railroad crossing. After it had swung back about five or six feet, a boy standing on the bridge wanted to jump ashore, and another boy standing on the shore tried to jump on the bridge. They jumped against each other and fell into the canal. A young man named Reel Launders jumped in and brought one of the boys ashore, who was not hurt in the least. Launders did not know of the other boy being in the water for some time after, when he went to the bottom once or twice and brought his body ashore. Everything possible was done to restore him to life, but without avail. The mother of the boy came on the scene at this time, and before any one could prevent her she jumped from the bridge to the rocks below, some twelve or fifteen feet, breaking one of her legs. She was immediately rescued and a chair procured and she was about to be placed in it to be carried home, a large dog which had followed her sprang on one of the men and bit him severely. The dog had to be shot in order to get him off.
