The Gazette reproduces the names of the Democratic County delegates, and then asks if those men and those who appointed them, only had the control of the county—were in the majority—'what would the lives of the Union men be worth?' What nonsense! There is not a man on the list with whom the Gazette has not done business we presume; there is not one there for whom Mr. Sanders would not do a little bit of work, and take a 'five' any day, yet who would accuse such a remarkable patriot as he, of having intercourse with traitors? We also undertake to say there is not a man among them with whom Mr. Sanders would not feel himself perfectly safe under any circumstances; not a single one that he would not accost in a friendly manner; not one that he dares to single out and openly state that he believes a traitor—a hater of his country—worse than thief, robber, murderer—a man who has rightfully incurred and richly deserves a traitor's doom—death by the rope. If there is let him say so. He will not do it, and yet utters such foolish language as we quote above! It is a serious charge—one that Mr. Sanders does not believe himself, and hence the more mean it is for him to make it. He only does it to cater to a sort of morbid passion or hatred. He would not on his oath state that he believes any one of those delegates to be a traitor, yet he insinuates and charges it through the Gazette. Is that the part of a man? The question is out of order, perhaps in this instance. The other day the Gazette trumped up a story about the refusal of a certain firm here to loan one of the delegates money, because he was a 'traitor.' Little inquiry into the matter showed that there was no such refusal made—that the conversation between the two parties was in a friendly joking manner, yet the Gazette heralds it forth as a thing of actual occurrence, as a flat refusal on the part of an Union man to loan a 'traitor' money—as a merited rebuke to 'traitors.' That paper should apologize for the set.
If Bro. Sanders is strong in the belief that there are traitors about here—if he is convinced of the fact, as he loses no occasion to intimate in his paper, then we must say that he is an arrant scoundrel for not filing information in a legal manner against them. There is a law in force which touches this matter, and if it is not carried out it will probably be because Bro. Sanders has conscientious scruples about swearing out an information! Now come out of that tell grass and be honest: Tell the people all about it. He who cries 'stop thief' so loudly, comes to be suspected himself sometimes. Just name the man in this country whom you consider a traitor.
