THE PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE.
The message of President Cleveland is a state document to be quoted from in the history of this country. It illustrates what is true Americanism in our foreign policy; he is firm in the bold faith, as heretofore stated by the TRIBUNE, that having done wrong in Hawaii we must return to the "status quo ante." As to Brazilian matters, he is firm and right. America has large interests there. He believes in protecting our missionaries in China and so do we-with good guns, if needed. He believes in the proper mode of Christianizing Africa. And, by the way, we wonder that we "civilized" folks haven't done it before this. Now it seems that it is going to be done with rifles and cannon and that the Africans will be civilized by England and Germany, as America was when the red man owned the country. The President is a little "shy" on the tariff, but evidently favors the Wilson bill as a starter. It is good to go easy. The message is a good one.
