MARSHALL, TEXAS.-Last Friday night at the "East Texas Fair" in Marshall, the Wiley Wildcats inaugurated the 1935 conference season by trouncing the Bishop Bears, 6-0, in a game which was replete with thrills from the opening whistle to the final gun.
However, it is only one more of the many times that I have seen an inferior opponent carry the "never-say-die" spirit into combat and ultimately emerge the victor. Wiley has long been known for her determination to fight to the last, and other than the three P's of football-punt, pass and prayer-she hardly had anything but fight to offer to a very formidable Bear machine. In every department of the game-- except the highly important phase of scoring--Bishop clearly outclassed Wiley.
Bishop made 13 first downs to Wiley's three, in all three times as much yardage from scrimmage, and all of the gains which were made from passes. As the game ended, the Bears were pounding on the Cats' goal line but an alert Wiley back intercepted a Bishop pass just as the final gun fired.
Coach Long told me he lost 20 pounds during the last two minutes of as interesting a game as we shall see in many a moon.
The difference in winning and losing was the cool and heady manner in which "boat" Barnes, the mercurial quarterback, ran his team, compared to the spasmodic, jerky and nervous way the 150 pound streak of greased lightning generaled his forces.
The enthusiasm shown was that which is typical of the age old Wiley-Bishop feud and the combatants on the field seemed to be permeated by the atmosphere that exuded from the stands, because it was a very rough, he-man's game, resulting in many, many fumbles caused by the hard but clean tackling. Quite a few alumni of both schools from here attended the game, and other friends of both schools who are not alumni. The Jacquets, the Flournoys, Drs. Borders and Mayfield, John Mayfield, John Mebane, Coach Bates, who officiated as field judge, and the entire Mind staff. There are others I am sure that I have forgotten to mention. Believe it or not! We made the drive to Marshall in three hours and forty minutes. Editor Wise driving!

GAMES FOR WEEK
The games for this week are somewhat scarce, with Langston and Bishop meeting in Langston October 11. I am afraid Langston is going to pack too much power for a somewhat light -but fast Bishop eleven, so mark this as another Conference loss for the Bears, Texas College squares off for another stand against Shorter College in Little Rock which should be only a warm-up for the Steers. Wiley meets Arkansas State at Pine Bluff and since State showed such a glaring weakness against Texas two weeks ago, the Wild Cats should take this one easily. This brings us down to the real feature of the week-the Fort Worth-Dallas game Thursday night.
My batting average is climbing sky high as a prognosticator and I am hoping to finish the season with a creditable showing. I am going to hold enough to predict Terrell to win over the Dallasites by a touchdown margin, solely on the belief they cannot completely bottle George Adams, and if they do, then there are Aldridge, Jackson, Love, Denson and others, so for the first time in three years, cast your vote in the Terrell derby and bet your cigars on the side.
