Ohio Lad
Makes Good

Another Ohio lad is making his way up the ladder of success in the entertainment business. He is Jesse Owens of Akron, 18-year-old baritone, who won the first quarter finals of 1950 on Horace Heidt's Original Youth Opportunity program in Minneapolis with his rendition of "Glory Road."

Jesse was competing for the $750 first prize after previously winning $250 as midwest audiences applauded his interpretations of spirituals.

Heidt discovered Jesse in his home town of Akron where he was working as a shoe shine boy in the Portage Hotel barber shop in order to earn money to pay for his beloved singing lessons. On the night he graduated from high school, Heidt called on him to sing on his Philip Morris broadcast. Ever since he has been proving Heidt's faith in him.

Altho he was a football star in high school and graduated with scholastic honors, Jesse's own personal "Glory Road" leads to the only goal he has set for himself - to become America's greatest baritone.
