VERO BEACH, Fla. (CNS) - The Dodgers have decided to talk trade again and Junior Gilliam is up for bait for the interested Philadelphia Phillies who have yet to take on a Negro player.
Not that this is a new idea. It's been on and off again all winter long. It had been rumored that the Phillies offered the once brilliant pitcher Curt Simmons and catcher Smokey Burgess for Junior Gilliam and Jackie Robinson.
This the Dodgers aren't keen about but they would go for Gilliam in exchange for a couple of pinch hitters.
Why Gilliam for bait? Because he's expendable since the Dodgers are loaded with infielders. With so many newcomers ready to step in, they can let Junior go - providing they get a good hitting pinchhitter to plug up this hole on the club.
