SENTENCED TO STATE PRISON.
For Using the Mails for Purposes of Fraud.

Hartford, Conn., June 1.

In the United States District Court today, H. L. Millis of New Milford pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 months in the State prison and a fine of $500. He was one of the two rascals who have for years swindled merchants in New York, Boston and elsewhere, by ordering goods which they disposed of for whatever they could get and pocketed the proceeds, relying on a small amount of individual loss to protect them from prosecution. On complaint of local merchants, United States Attorney Stanton prosecuted the ringleaders for using the mails for purposes of fraud. The other swindler, Thompson, who pleaded guilty last Friday, was today sentenced to two years and a half in the State prison. This effectually breaks up the gang.
