Some time ago we illustrated a new process of stone sawing with diamonds, the invention of Mr. J. E. Emerson, Ford & Co., of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where they now have the process in operation, sawing both with diamond and steel chisels, used in circular saws. The diamond saw runs very rapidly, and cuts the very hardest stone known. The saw using small chisels runs very slowly, and on a trial, only a few days ago, split lengthwise nine hard sandstone blocks, three feet ten inches in length and ten inches wide, in eighty-seven minutes by the watch, making twenty-eight superficial feet of actual sawing, and at a cost of less than six cents per foot. The saw is driven by a four inch belt from a twelve inch driving pulley, so that the power required is very small. It is claimed that no other process now known can saw an equal amount in four hours, and that an equal amount cannot be sawed with an old style sand saw in ten hours. The principle is that of crushing rather than cutting the stone. The surface of the stone sawed is said to be better than hand dressed. There is no doubt but this process is in advance of any other known, and is destined to come into general use and be of great value.
