ORANGEBURG, S.C.—Oliver C. Dawson, head of the department Physical Education and head coach at South Carolina State A. & M College, is one of the new coaches who ranks among the "Who's Who" in Southern Intercollegiate athletic conference.
At the athletic and physical education helm at S. C. State A. & M for just two years he has piloted his charges to many new heights. Roy K. Davenport, head of the department of education, liberal arts college and Coach Dawson have just successfully closed the South Carolina State Open Tournament sanctioned by the American Tennis Assn held on the new courts at S.C. State College. During the past school year, under his direct supervision and planning he, South Carolina State High School basketball tournament attracted the largest enthusiast in the history of the event. The South Carolinas varsity Basketball team were semi-finalists in the Southern Conference Tournament and the fast stepping "Bull dogs" of Southern Conference gridiron games finished the season far up in the first division of the 1937-38 season.
Coach Dawson is quite just now about prospects but every team on the hard schedule to be played this season will have tough going against them.
Coach Dawson attended John Carroll University of Cleveland, Ohio, three years and one year at S.C. State College of which he is a graduate. He was all Midwest fullback in 1933. He was coached by Ralph Vince, former star of W. and J. and maker of one of the national Rose Bowl "teams" "Pop" Glaser, sensational halfback from Tulane "another of his coaches".
Coach Dawson has attended six coaching schools supervised by such celebrities as Andy Kerr, Lou Little, John Da Grossa.
Coach Dawson uses the Tulane system with variations, which he states as proven very successful.
