By the arrival of the steamer James L. Day at New Orleans on the 23d ult. we have five days later news from Vera Cruz. By this arrival we learn that Santa Anna had taken possession of Puebla with 6000 men and summoned Col. Childs to surrender, giving him the privilege of marching out with the honors of war and forming a junction either with Gen. Scott or the American forces at Perote. In reply to this summons Col. Childs declined marching out. The American works were then assaulted, but with little effect, but Puebla suffered from being bombarded. Santa Anna finding it impossible to drive Colonel Childs from his position, started on the 1st ult. with 2000 men and 3 pieces of artillery, to attack the American train which left Jalapa on the 1st ult. but before arriving at Tepeyacualco his designs were frustrated by all his men leaving him except 130 hussars of his personal guard. The details of the news will be given in our next.
