Two Convicts Terribly Affected by
a Comrade's Fate.
Philadelphia, March 6.—Yesterday,
when Dr. Gearson was hanged, two
convicts confined in the prison were
terribly affected by the knowledge of
what was going on. Joseph Barrett,
55 years old, confined in a cell near
the gallows, showed intense interest in
the hanging, but information was de-
ied and his cell sealed during the ex-
ecution, but Barrett must have heard
the footsteps of the solemn procession
on the way to the gallows, for when
his cell was opened he was found
dead. Death is attributed to fright.
The other man, James Taylor, under
sentence of death for murder, became
delirious with fear. He heard the
noise as he sat in the cell, and the
echo of falling doors had hardly died
away when the murderer was found
writhing in convulsions.
