GREAT NATIONAL CONVENTION
GRAND MOVE OF THE LIBERAL REPUBLICANS!
GRANT'S WORKS TO BE CAPTURED!
The White House for Rent Next November!
Thousands of Honest Republicans in Council!
GREAT ENTHUSIASM!
HORACE GREELEY FOR PRESIDENT!
B. GRATZ BROWN FOR VICE PRESIDENT!
Every State and Territory Represented in the Convention!

The great National Convention of Liberal Republicans met in Exposition Hall, in Cincinnati on Wednesday, May 1st, 1872, at 12 M., and effected a temporary organization by the election of Hon. Stanley Mathews, of Ohio, as temporary Chairman, and George Ward Nichols, of Ohio, George W. Palmer, of New York, and Joseph Pulitzer, of Missouri, as temporary Secretaries. It was undoubtedly the largest political gathering of the kind that ever assembled in the United States. Its proceedings were watched for with intense interest by men of all political parties.

We must here remark that when the call for this convention was first issued by the Executive Committee of the Missouri Liberal State Convention, it was stigmatised and ridiculed by the Grant organs as belonging to the "day of small things," yet in that short space of time it has accomplished wonders in changing public opinion among the honest masses of that party against the corrupt administration of Grant and his horde of thieves and cormorants, and in favor of economy and reform.

As soon as it was discovered that the example of independence set by the Missouri Republicans was being followed by the Republicans of other States, the administration, with its press and entire pack of federal officials, were set upon the originators of the movement to hound them down for daring to favor an honest administration of the affairs of the Nation.

Should the programme laid down in the original call be carried out, the Democrats will have the satisfaction of knowing that a large portion of the intelligent and honest men of the Republican party agree with them on principles so long advocated by the Democracy.

Good feeling prevailed among all the delegates, and the feeling against President Present Taker Grant was immense.

On Thursday the several Committees, appointed the day previous, reported. Hon. Carl Shurz, of Missouri, was made permanent presiding officer of the Convention.

Delegates were present from every State and Territory in the United States. Every Congressional District of Ohio was represented. The 11th district was represented by D. McFarland and John Wilhelm of Scioto; R. Aleshire of Gallia; William Baughman of Vinton.

Before the balloting commenced a platform was adopted which no Grant worshipper can endorse. For want of room we omit the address and platform until next week.

A wilder scene of excitement than that which followed the announcement of Greeley's nomination, cannot be imagined. A dispatch was received from him accepting the nomination. The convention proceeded to the nomination of a candidate for the Vice Presidency.

The ballots resulted:

FIRST BALLOT

Trumbull declined to be a candidate for Vice President under any circumstances.

SECOND BALLOT
The nomination of Brown was made unanimous.

A more harmonious Convention was never held, and the expression of opinion was honest and genuine, and was aided by the arrangement made that the nominations should be general on a call of the States.
