Detroit.-A goal toward which the
Detroit and Wayne County Federation
of Labor long has striven-namely, to
enter the post-war period without a
dime of debt on its $150,000 headquarters
building-was achieved this
week.
Through contributions from AFL
members, a $50,000 mortgage on the
property was paid up, and the mortgage
was publicly burned at ceremonies
last Saturday night. President
William Green, of the AFL, and Mayor
Edward J. Jeffries, main speakers at
the event, congratulated Detroit labor
on the achievement.
Known originally as the "Old Colony
Club," the building was put up by rich
clubwomen in 1928 at a cost of $100,000.
The Federation of Labor acquired
it for $150,000 in 1941. It is one of the
finest labor temples in the country.
