ABOUT SCHOOLS.
Our School Trustees are about to award the public school to some one who will take upon himself the responsible trust of leading the youth aright up the road of knowledge. The duties of a School Trustee, little as the office is supposed to be fruitful of honors, are important, requiring a clear appreciation of men as well as capacity to judge well of the qualifications of applicants to teach. Their position is to our mind one of the most responsible that an American citizen can be called on to fill. The influence of a teacher tells on the scholar for life. The teacher may shape the destiny of the child committed to his care: How important, then, every parent must feel the duties of an instructor to be, and be anxious that he be fitted to discharge the responsible trust committed to him. Money is no object in the selection of a teacher. We owe it to the young that the very best instruction be provided for them. They demand a tutor versed in the branches of education he teaches, who can write a good hand, who is even tempered and patient, who has no bad habits, who is gentle and agreeable in his manners, firm and rigid in requiring obedience to his requirements, of good judgment and blessed with the gift of imparting instruction. Such a teacher is invaluable. The worth of his labors is not to be computed by dollars and cents. Perhaps all the instruction a child is ever to receive is to be derived from the tutor about to be employed. It is the part of wise men having the welfare of the human race at heart to act well their part in placing the young under proper influences. Our School Trustees are well selected. Not a solitary individual can find fault with one of them. It is hoped they will be mindful of the duties belonging to their office, not value it at the vulgar estimation, and give the youth of our city, whose needs are great indeed, the best teacher that can be found to employ.
Since the above was written, good teachers have been chosen. The admonition is good for next year.
