On the Arrival of Mr. Wilkes at Tunbridge Wells he inquired of the Landlord of the Inn where he put up if he could recommend him to Lodgings, when the Landlord replied that he had Lodgings of his own, and that if he thought proper he should see them. Mr. Wilkes accordingly surveyed them, and fixed upon three Rooms for himself and Daughter, and three for his Servants; and on inquiring the Price was answered by the Host that he must have ten Shillings a Week for each of the three Rooms for himself and Daughter, and nine Shillings each for the Servants Rooms. Upon which Mr. Wilkes replied, as that made the celebrated Number 45 he would not quit that in the Lodgings, on any Account.
