BRUTAL MURDER
SAN DIEGO, Cal., Dec. 18—Andrew
Mitchell, a real estate dealer, and
John H. Jones, a mulatto stableman,
were arrested in this city early this
morning on a charge of having murdered
Matthias Mau, the aged German
ranchman, who was shot dead at his
home near Jamul last Friday.
The mulatto was first taken into custody.
He told the officers that he and
Mitchell went to the Mau brothers'
place for the purpose of robbery. Jones
said that after they arrived at the
ranch he went across the road to get
a drink of water from the well, and
while there he saw Mitchell deliberately
raise his revolver and shoot Mau
three times. He said he hurried back
across the road and together the men
dragged the body of their victim to the
place where it was later found by the
brother. They then looted the house.
Soon after Jones had confessed Mitchell
was arrested.
