(This Lighthouse And Informer)
On February 20, or just three months after members of the S. C. Conference of the Methodist Church had voted to raise $50,000 during 1946, a total of $30,771 was reported by Methodist ministers in behalf of Claflin College at Orangeburg.
The amount was more than twice the sum raised in any single year for operation of the school and the youthful president J. J. Seabrook who came to the college last year reports that one-half, or $50,000 of a $100,000 goal launched last October 12: By Easter it is expected that about $25,000 more will be contributed to the college.
To understand this revolution at Claflin-and it is nothing short of revolution-it is only necessary to understand the purposefulness of the new goals set by Dr. Seabrook. Those who laughed when he left a fine position and "demoted" himself to pioneer at Claflin, are now seriously applauding his program. Before he came, alumni of the college and Methodist ministers felt the school was worth little. The enrollment and physical aspects of the school had suffered for years. But today, in its first year under Dr. Seabrook, there is concern over housing. Moreover, unlike his predecessor, the new president is taking his program smack into the homes of church members and making them feel their responsibility.
There's a revolution going on down at Claflin in Orangeburg, and, it's the kind of revolutions we like to see.
