Full Text
The deputation of the empire held sittings the 2d and 3d of this month to deliberate upon the short and cutting answer which the French ministers have given to the long deliberations of the 1st of February and the 1st of March. The plenipotentiaries of the empire have long been undecided upon the part they ought to take; but the ministers of many Austrian states having represented that if they did not accede to the preliminary propositions of the French republic, the war would be recommenced, and that all those countries of the empire which had not made their private peace with France, would be invaded in a very short time; these motives joined to the counter note which removes every means of eluding the principal question relative to the cession of all the left bank of the Rhine, finally determined the deputation to make the complete sacrifice. They have declared, it is said, that they will abandon all the left bank. but upon condition that the French republic, on its side, shall accept the conditions annexed to that cession.
