Alexandria Advertiser.
Friday, August 26,
On the subject of the present threatened
invasion of England--echoed and re-echo-
ed through the whole phalanx of party,
we hesitate not a moment to predict the
fate of the French expedition--and let
them hereafter mark our words.
Should Bonaparte evade the vigilance
of Sir Sidney Smith, in the British Chan-
nel, a circumstance that, at least, hitherto
has refused: should he escape
the dangers of the sea, and once put his
foot on the British Shore, he there ends
his reign of glory.
He will not there find a set of undisci-
plined Mamelukes, or a body of beotted
Turks to receive him. He will not find
Britons rallying round the standard of
equality, for that bubble Bonaparte him-
self has long ago burst--but he will find
himself "taking his measure in an unmade
grave"--or pining in captivity among his
incensed enemy. On the other hand,
let his friends in America tell us, we did
not read his fate, when he adds England to his conquests,
not read his fate.
