A special to the Register from our regular correspondent at Burton, this morning, details an account of one of the most sickening and diabolical crimes which we have recently been called upon to print. A devoted wife, an innocent child, and a young lady friend, are all murdered in cold blood, in the dead of night, by, no one—save God—knows who. May He point out, with unerring finger, the cowardly assassin, and may the law be swift in avenging the triple crime.
The bloody tragedy was enacted in the neighboring county of Wetzel, near the line of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. A Coroner's inquest was doubtless held on the dead bodies last night, but up to the hour of writing this we have not received the result.
The most shocking crimes are becoming fearfully frequent, of late, all over the country. There is clearly something wrong in the punishment of criminals; the execution of the penalties pronounced against evil doers is neither swift nor certain. It is time that the public conscience be aroused to this fact.
