The Democratic Mass Meeting at Hamilton,
Butler county, Ohio, on Saturday last, was an
immense assemblage, gathered from all parts of
the State, and even from adjoining States.—
Flags, banners, and national ensigns floated
in the breeze, amid the booming of cannon and
the playing of national airs by several bands of
music. Never did an immense multitude of
people, of both sexes and of all ages, seem more
enthusiastic or more firmly united in one noble
and patriotic purpose—the salvation of our com-
mon country from the ruthless hands of its de-
stroyers.
The organization of the meeting was as
follows:
President—Judge Elijah Vance.
Secretary—M. N. Maginnis.
Grand Marshal—Carmen Stephenson.
Assistant Marshals—Captain Humbach,
John Mickley, Thos. McCarton, David Furlow,
and one from each township.
Committee on Reception—Judge J. Clark,
Dr. John McElwee, Robert Christy, Judge
Joseph Traber and Thos. Connaughton.
Committee of Arrangements—E. H. Gaston,
J. S. Wiles, W. C. Hunter, Peter Mulder, John
Moore, James K. Webster, David Maris, Ar-
thur Stewart, J. J. Owens, James Timberman,
Alexander Ogle, George Vinnage, Chas Barber,
J. L. Withrow, R. Hazeltine and Peter Mur-
phy.
Eloquent and patriotic speeches were made
by Messrs. Vallandigham, Pendleton and Mc-
Kinney, of Ohio, Mr. Voorhees, of Indiana,
and others. The speeches were interrupted by
frequent and prolonged applause. The meeting
lasted for seven hours, and during that time the
greater part of the assemblage, estimated at
ten or twelve thousand, stood up, without show-
ing any signs of weariness.
The following resolutions, offered by Mr.
Maginnis, were adopted unanimously:
Whereas, It is of the highest importance, in
the present alarming state of the public affairs,
that the sentiment of the people should be as-
certained and expressed; therefore,
Resolved, By the Third Congressional District
of Ohio, in mass meeting in the city of Hamil-
ton, that we earnestly recommend a Democratic
National Convention to be held in the city of In-
diapolis, on the third Tuesday of May next, and
request the Democratic National Committee to
issue a call for the same, in pursuance of the
usages of former conventions; and further, that
the Democracy be invited to meet with the del-
egates in mass meeting, at the same time and
place.
Resolved, That in selecting a candidate for
Governor of Ohio, our choice devolves on one
who was our steward, and who for six consecu-
tive years has been greeted with the "Well
done, good and faithful servant;" upon one
who, with prophetic voice, gave to his people
this solemn warning: "In the day thou eatest
the fruit of the Abolition tree, thou shalt sure-
ly die;" upon one who loved the Union as it
was constructed, and the Constitution as it was
organized; upon one whose imagination aggre-
gating the blessings of the past, beguiled his
judgment and preserved his faith in the unity of
the Government, long after it had been riven
by the thunderbolt, and scattered by the storm;
upon Clement L. Vallandigham.
Resolved, That the Democracy of the Third
Congressional District of Ohio, send greeting
to the gallant and true Democrats of Connecti-
cut, and hail with a single voice their great
champion of constitutional government, Thom-
as H. Seymour.
