MILITARY ACADEMY.

The public will be gratified to learn, that the Gridley Farm, as it is Called, in the vicinity of the Military Academy at West Point, has at length been purchased by the United States, for $10,000, the amount appropriated by Congress at the present session. Possession is to be taken in May next, when the house which has long been occupied as a tavern, to the prejudice and injury of the Academy, will be converted into a hospital. The house stands in an eligible situation, immediately upon the bank of the Hudson, with a free air and an extensive view of the river and mountains. It is sufficiently remote from the noise and bustle of the parade, to conduce to the quiet and comfort of the sick, for whose accommodation it is intended.

The purchase includes Fort Putnam, which is one of the finest ruins in the country, and ought to be preserved in its present state, as a memorial of revolutionary events, and as adding much to the picturesque scenery of West Point. It can be of little use either for cultivation, or for military works; and we understand it is the determination of the officers of the Academy, to prevent further dilapidations.

The purchase of the Gridley Farm extends the jurisdiction of the United States over all the plain embraced by the amphitheatre of mountains, on the west side of the river at this place, and will in all respects conduce to the interest and convenience of the Academy. Although most of the land is rugged and of little intrinsic value, the purchase will prove auspicious to the future prosperity of an institution, which under the fostering care of government, has already attained a high degree of perfection, and promises to be of great and lasting utility to the country.
Institution, which is the pride and ornament of the country.

Great preparations are making for the approaching examination, which will commence on the first Monday in June, and continue three weeks. An unusual number of strangers may be expected, as the institution is annually becoming more popular and attracting a greater share of public attention. The perfect system of discipline which has been enforced; the ability with which all its departments are filled: and the extent to which the scientific attainments of the cadets are carried, have rendered it the first school of the kind in the world.
