The Register makes a great parade of the meeting held in this city on Wednesday evening by "the Democracy," to regulate the Banks, the Governor, and our "monetary system." It is represented as one of the greatest affairs of the kind that ever happened. It may be so, for we do not recollect another instance in which the populace have been called on for such a purpose. But, however large the assemblage may have been, we believe the agitators and operators were very few. Three or four radicals took the lead, and some twenty or thirty of their followers threw up their caps and cried step-boy. Most of the audience were mere spectators, and regarded the performance as ridiculous and contemptible. And how should it be otherwise? When grave and important subjects of legislation, which many wise and studious minds are wholly incompetent to grasp or to understand, are taken up and decided on by a popular assemblage of all classes and conditions of men, who can contemplate their doings with seriousness and respect? Judge Darling may be a very good agriculturist, James N. Palmer a good engineer, and Mr. Barber an excellent printer, "by authority," but we doubt their competency to regulate the currency, or to better the system upon which is based the enterprise and prosperity of the country. We are now experiencing the blessed effects of party management with these affairs, and the sooner we are done with it the better. "The Democracy" must ride some other hobby than the Banks or its end will be that of the beggar on horseback. The greatest evil is that it will not suffer alone.
