Full Text

Some of the Boston federal papers have lately published an account current of loss and gain by the war; and exultingly mention the capture, by the British, of the ship Marquis de Someruelos, from Civita Vecchia, with a cargo, worth (as they say) nearly $300,000, which single capture is asserted to be greater in amount than the whole of the prizes taken by our vessels. All this, with many other misstatements, are vamped up with a view to render the war unpopular, and to effect base party purposes. The fact is the above vessel was taken under the Orders in Council, her cargo is said to be worth about $150,000--and instead of an argument against the war, is, we think a very forcible argument in favor of it, as she would have been taken and condemned by the British if war had not been declared against them.

Event Details

Boston federal papers published an account of war losses and gains, exultingly mentioning the British capture of the ship Marquis de Someruelos from Civita Vecchia with cargo worth nearly $300,000, asserted to exceed all US prizes. This and other misstatements aim to render the war unpopular for party purposes. The capture supports the war, as the ship would have been taken by the British regardless.
