Paris.—While the French army from Belfort is moving rapidly northward clearing upper Alsace of Germans the troops operating in Lorraine
have encountered strong opposition. The advance cavalry reconnaissance developed the presence of a large German force between Chateau Salins and Morchingen, with entrenchments as far as the Seille River. The Germans are heavily supported with artillery, indicating that it is the intention of their general staff to oppose a French advance on Metz. In Alsace the Germans are reported, in the first official bulletin issued today, to be retreating toward the Rhine and on Strassburg.
