Full Text

Extract of a Letter which Prince Gallitzin the Russian Minister at the Hague, received the 14th inst. from an officer on board the Russian fleet, in the Archipelago, dated at Tasso, Oct. 19, 1771.

"The transactions of the present campaign, tho' perhaps not so brilliant as those of last year, are nevertheless of some consequence. Before any great stroke could be struck, it was necessary previously to destroy the magazines which were established for the supply of the capital. With this view Count Alexis Orlow went with the fleet and bombarded Negropont, while the troops which landed seized the magazines of corn and flour. His squadron afterwards cruized along the coast of Macedonia, bombarded Cavallo, destroyed or carried off the considerable magazines at Salonica, and in the gulf of Cassandria. On the other side, Count Theodore Orlow scoured Natolia, cannonaded Rhodes, and afterwards entered the gulf of Macri. This place since the war has been made the depository of the corn that is brought from Syria and Egypt, which from thence is sent by land to Constantinople. Under the direction of his Excellency I had the honour to command the troops that were sent ashore upon this occasion. The enemy at first made a show of defending their magazines but were soon obliged to abandon them with the loss of 60 men, besides several wounded and made prisoners. We likewise took some chebecks and four pieces of cannon, and had only two men killed and a few wounded. A transport ship with troops on board was attacked by five Turkish galleys, but after a smart engagement the latter were forced to sheer off. This is the substance of what had passed in this part of the world."
