Cotton Farmers Urged To Release Acres

Action to check possible erosion of Mississippi's cotton acreage was taken in Jackson last week as representatives of key agricultural groups began a campaign to urge farmers to release allotted cotton acreage which they do not plan to use.

A similar drive last year resulted in the release of some 182,759 acres for reapportionment on other farms in Mississippi where additional cotton acreage was wanted. Of this amount, 84,431 acres were released to the state ASC committee for reapportionment to other counties, and 98,328 acres were reapportioned within the county of origin.

For Mississippi last year it was estimated that the reapportionment program resulted in between $25 and $37 million that would otherwise have been lost to the state's economy. In addition, the program helped safeguard the state's cotton acreage history which determines future acreage allotments.

Groups meeting in Jackson Tuesday included the Mississippi Farm Bureau Federation, the Agricultural Extension Service, Delta Council, Mississippi ASC personnel, the A&I Board and cotton producers and industry representatives.

An action committee was appointed to begin an intensive publicity and educational campaign for the next nine weeks emphasizing the need for Mississippi farmers to make maximum use of their cotton allotment.
