SPIRIT OF THE TIMES.

Extract of a letter from a gentleman in Canada to his friend in this town, dated September 8.

"The French Militia have been turned out: the 2d brigade on Tuesday last. And if you recollect, that one fifth of the whole were to be called out from the main body, and be equipped with arms. The commander called on those he chose: They being embodied, he called for every 5th man to step 6 paces out from the main body. His call was not obeyed in the least. Some said they would not step out without the rest: and some made bold to say, they would not take up arms against the Americans, but would join them when they chose,--Forty who said they would join the Americans, were committed to prison, and their trial will be tomorrow. They were committed for mutiny."
