Dog Eat Dog!
In a recent speech in Missouri, Senator
Green said:
"Then, they bring a charge against Jno.
C. Breckinridge of being a disunionist.—
Now, gentlemen, who is upon the ticket
with Stephen A. Douglas, as bearer of their
broad seal? Mr. Herschel V. Johnson,
who a few years since run for Governor on
the secession ticket, and my friend Howell
Cobb had to go down to Georgia, and, by
running on the Union ticket, whip Herschel
V. Johnson the disunionist, from the course.
And yet, those who pretend to object to J.
C. Breckinridge because of his disunion
proclivities, place the acknowledged and
rabid disunionist, Herschel V. Johnson, in
the second post of honor in their national
affections! And how did H. V. Johnson
get upon the Douglas ticket for Vice Presi-
dent of the United States? Was he regu-
larly nominated? Did he receive a two-
thirds nomination? Did he receive a one-
half nomination? Did he receive a one-
third nomination? Did he receive a one-
fourth nomination, or any nomination at
all? As the boys say, "nary a nomina-
tion!"
(Laughter and applause) The
facts are that the nomination was offered to
old Ben. Fitzpatrick, an excellent old fel-
low, too good and too sensible a fox to be
caught in such a trap, and he declined the
honor. Well, was there a new convention,
or any regular assembling, or consultation
to fill the vacancy? None at all; but some
unaccredited, and almost unknown persons
suggested to the press and the party, what
there is of it, H. V. Johnson, and his name
was substituted for Mr. Fitzpatrick's."
