WASHINGTON, Jan. 15, 1845,
We must have some rumor or excitement on which to exist, or we would die of ennui, and therefore, having settled the duel on Monday, we have got up another rumor here yesterday, which I shall refer to for the information of your readers.
The report is, that a distinguished officer of one of the Houses of Congress has put his hand in the people's pocket to the tune of some thirty, or forty thousand dollars. This will be another feather in the cap of that party who claim that "to the victors belong the spoils." It may be that part of this money was used to bring about the great moral result of the late election. It is hinted, too, that a distinguished member of the "unbribed and unpurchased Democracy" received some $2000 of the money to invest in an interesting manufactory of "facts for the people."
I need not mention names, as the matter will probably be made public in a day or two. It is far from being a pleasant duty to notice such things, and a premature disclosure might injure the parties referred to. The Finance Committee have it under consideration, and will probably report upon it soon. There are sureties to the amount of some $20,000 which will fall heavily on two Senators and two members of the House, only one of whom is very able to contribute so large a share to the operations, financial or otherwise, of the party.
