WOMAN AS A PEACE-MAKER.—We can make this fair heritage of humanity a harrowing scene of desolation without her aid. We can enslave millions of our fellow-beings, and set open wide the sluices of human blood, and whiten the earth with human bones: we can curse our species with every form of misery and malediction without her aid: but we cannot bless mankind, we can do nothing for their good, without the co-operating influence of woman. "Last at the cross and first at the sepulchre," she must be first at the grave of a world buried in sin, and assist at its resurrection to the light of a new day. It is on the development and diffusive influence of her angel nature so congenial with the love-spirit of the Gospel, that we predicate some of our strongest hopes of success in the effort to exterminate from the Christian world the Abaddon genius of War; to whose support both she and the Gospel have been perverted for long dark centuries of human history. Her smile once made millions of warriors, who drenched the world with blood for the bright guerdon of her eye. Let her now smile on the side of heaven and humanity; and the light of her eye and the love of her heart shall enlist millions of soldiers in the ranks of the Prince of Peace.
