SENSE FROM OHIO.

Ohio generally is in favor of the enforcement of the interstate commerce long and short haul law, because the Act is a protective tariff for Ohio productions. It raises the value of every acre of land in Ohio to remove the competition of the West, and this is just what Mr. Free-trade Cleveland's un-American interstate protection does. Nevertheless, we have even from Ohio a sensible expression now and then—one that looks beyond the merely selfish interest. Thus, the Columbus Dispatch says:

As a general rule, the large manufacturers of the country demand the suspension of the long and short haul section, while those who urge its enforcement are small concerns, with very poor facilities, which cannot get out their products as cheaply as can the larger and better equipped concerns, and which see in the strict enforcement of the fourth section a grand opportunity to build themselves up at the expense of the larger establishments.
