LOVE AT THE BALL.

Listen, my love; hear how the waltzes
Greet us and call us, like words of a song:
Hear the sweet notes as they blend through the arches,
Pleading the night to be merry and long.
Hear how the measures invite us and beckon.
Throbbing so sweet from the strings and the flutes—
Hear the rich basses—mark how the baton
Points out the way for the circling groups.
Dance with you, dearest? Yes: let us hasten
Swinging around with the beau and the bells—
Oh, hear the waltzes—all music surpassing—
Except—when "Lohengrin" from church organ swells.
