The following is a correct Copy of General Monckton's Letter to the Chairman of the East India Company:

Gentlemen,
Bruton Street, June 14.

I HAVE received a Letter from your Secretary, enclosing a Resolution of a General Court of the East India Company, by which they do me the Honour of recommending me to the Court of Directors, to appoint me Commander in Chief of their Forces in India.

The repeated Favours conferred on me by the Company are extremely flattering to me; but my Situation at present is such, both in Regard to my being excluded the Council, and his Majesty's most gracious Intention of providing for me, which was communicated to me the Day preceding the General Court, that I cannot with Propriety accept any Offers of Command or Power in India, however honourable or advantageous.

I must beg, Gentlemen, that you will assure the General Court of Proprietors that I shall ever retain the strongest Impressions of Gratitude for the Honour intended me, as well as the sincerest Wishes for the Prosperity of the Company. I have the Honour to be, &c.

To the Chairman and Deputy Chairman
of the East India Company.

ROBERT MONCKTON.
