the Providence Journal, whom we un-
derstand is the editor.
"Mr. Adams from the Committee on
Manufactures intends reporting some
very important alterations to the tariff of
1828, in order to pacify the South, by
yielding in a measure to their requisitions.
This is but rumor, yet there is reason to
believe it is too well founded. The
friends of the American system have
nothing to fear from the report of Mr.
Adams; they command ample majorities
in both houses, and have in each the most
able advocates to defend the system."
