Boy Scout Leaders Are Heard At Meeting Here Last Night

Four officials and leaders of the Occoneechee Council of Boy Scouts, at a dinner meeting of Dunn-Erwin business and civic leaders, last night emphasized the value of Scouting and the role which adults play in supporting the program.

Playing host to the civic group were: County Chairman Waite Howard, Al Wullenwaber, vice president of the council, and Norman Suttles, chamber of commerce manager and former Scout executive.

The dinner meeting was held at Johnson's Restaurant. Mr. Wullenwaber opened the meeting and welcomed the group and then turned the chair over to President Howard.

Mr. Howard conceived the idea for the meeting several weeks ago when he heard the five speakers in Raleigh and invited them to Dunn.

VISITING SPEAKERS
They were: Roy Armstrong, of Chapel Hill, council president and Dean of Admissions at the University; Harold Makepeace of Sanford, former council president and now fund-chairman of the council; Commissioner Fred Dixon of Raleigh; Al Resche, Siler City publisher and prominent Scout and Rotary leader; and Ed Brower of Hope Mills, chairman of the council's extension committee.

Each of the five speakers made short, but outstanding appeals in behalf of Scouting and the audience was in agreement that they had never heard five finer speakers on a single program.

The speakers emphasized the responsibility of the adult population in getting behind a program which is so vital to the future leadership of the community.

Last night's meeting preceded the campaign to raise $93,000 in the 12-county region served by the council and many of those present are expected to play important roles in the local drive.
