Capital Move
Heads for Its
Second Defeat

ANCHORAGE (AP) A heavy opposition vote in all areas of the state outside of the Southcentral Senatorial District gave the explosive capital relocation Initiative No. 1 a heading toward its second defeat in two years today.

Only the Anchorage area and surrounding communities in the Susitna Valley on the Kenai Peninsula -- Seward included -- gave the measure, Initiative No. 1, a major boost.

In the Eighth Election District, which includes Anchorage, the vote for capital relocation was running approximately 4½-1.

In Southeast Alaska, where the bulk of opposition to the initiative centered, the vote was approximately 15½-1, far short of the 30-1 margin chalked up in the Panhandle in 1960.

The 1960 District 8 vote was some 3-1 for capital relocation.

The vote this year in the central area was approaching 2-1 against approximately the same margin experienced two years ago.

In Northwestern Alaska, the margin was almost 4-1 against, compared with 2-1 against in 1960.

The vote against the capital relocation initiative submitted to the voters two years ago was 23,972-18,865.
