EUROPEAN LETTER

From our Regular Correspondent.

The intelligence of the death of Professor Palmieri, who has lived for years in an observatory on the brink of the crater of Vesuvius, recalls an occasion in which he distinguished himself pre-eminently. It was in April, 1872, that one of the very worst and most devastating eruptions took place. The overflow of lava from the crater threatened Palmieri's observatory with instant ruin. While others were flying in panic, Palmieri remained calm and undisturbed in his threatened observatory, watching the electric discharges, noting the number and intensity of the earthquake shocks, and estimating the velocity of the lava, which, at any time, might have turned upon his watch-tower and destroyed it.
