Three years ago Mrs. Phoebe Hearst, widow of the late Senator George Hearst, gave to the city of Anaconda a free library. The gift was a noble one, but the library was housed in temporary quarters. Mrs. Hearst has now supplemented that gift with a library building. It is a beautiful structure, the architecture noble and simple. To Anaconda it will ever be a source of architectural pride; to the memory of Senator Hearst it will ever be a fitting tribute. To the Anaconda he owed much of his large fortune and his widow recognizes this in a most gracious and princely manner.
What were the ambitions and ideals of Senator Hearst's soul is made evident to all by the work that Mrs. Hearst is now doing. It was his fortune to have accumulated the means for realizing them. In his wife he had one who was in complete sympathy with him in all things, and who is making real the dreams of a long life. Truly is she a noble woman and nobly is she doing her work. At Berkeley she is developing plans for the university that will be a monument to her forever and forever. And grand as will be the visible, material monument, grander still will be the spiritual, intellectual monument that will come through the higher, broader, more liberal education of generations of American youth. The homage and reverence they will bear to her memory and that of her husband will be their best and truest monument.
