THE CHARTER ELECTION
Terminated yesterday gloriously for the republicans of this city. The contest was vigorously and obstinately maintained by both parties, and concluded with leaving them exactly balanced in the common council. There are five republican aldermen and assistants, and five federal aldermen and assistants elected. Last year there were 6 federal aldermen and 7 assistants, and 4 republican aldermen and 3 assistants chosen.
Last year there were 13 federal and 7 republican votes in the council, exclusive of the mayor and recorder ; this year they stand 10 and 10, for a casting vote to decide a political question.
Thus the republicans have succeeded in dividing the council; and what is of infinitely greater importance, have settled the question as to the political complexion of the city, which is now unequivocally republican, & friendly to the prosecution of the great conflict in which the general government have involved the country, for the defence of our rights and independence,
We have not the whole official returns from the several wards, but learn generally that the republicans have prevailed in the 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 10th. and the federalists in the 1st 2nd, 3d, 4th, and 9th, with the aldermen and assistants; and that there is an aggregate republican majority of several hundreds in the city and county, as we trust will be evinced in the state election in the approaching spring.
In the 4th ward the federal alderman was elected by a majority of 1, and the assistant by 3; and the republican assessors and collector and one constable are in, with the other constable federal.
The unity, vigor and zeal of the republicans of this city, in a trial of principle, under the peculiar hardships and discouraging circumstances incident to a commercial metropolis in a season of war, blockade and general privation, will be duly appreciated by a discerning people and have their weight in the public councils and relations of our country. We have again settled the political character of our city, and trust in the good sense and patriotic spirit of the citizens permanently and firmly to sustain it.
