Norfolk, May 20.
Schooner Temperance, Garland, Salem, 7 days, assorted cargo. On Wednesday, May 17, lat. 39, 32. long. 63, was fired at and brought to by a British sloop of war, and when within hail, the captain asked "why he did not endeavor to speak him when the first shot was fired?" Capt. Garland made answer, that he thought he was going to board him in his boat, seeing her along side; when he, brave commander said, "damn you, you ought to have known better you damned rascal" and then permitted capt. G. to proceed. On Thursday Capt. G. saw the same ship, and at 8 in the evening heard a brisk cannonading for the space of fifteen minutes, to the S.E. in which direction the sloop of war steered. This account of the firing is corroborated by four or five other captains arrived here.
